The clash of group D leading teams in Innsbruck will draw most
attention because Spain and Sweden have managed to develop a kind of
rivalry over the last few years. The teams were actually also in the
same qualifying group.
Sweden won Spain at home but Red Fury got their
revenge with a 3:0 win in the finish of the qualifications. They came
in first in the group but, of course, both sides booked their tickets
for the final tournament.
\Even before the championship started it was
clear that Spain and Sweden are the squads with highest chances of
qualifying for the next stage and in spite of Greece being the European
champions and Russia pretending to become the new force in European
football. This was only confirmed on Tuesday when Spain ran over
Russia, while Sweden broke Greek resistance in the second half.
Both
sides seemed quite reserved so it will be very interesting to see them
playing with full potential, since this duel could decide the first
place in the group and the easier rivals in the second stage. If any
rival can be considered easier, since group D will cross ways with the
death group made of Netherlands, France, Italy and Romania. Aragones
and Lagerback definitely won't make any calculations, nor hide their
weapons.

Although in EURO 2008 we saw France as main
favourites for the crown, we must admit that we are not impressed with
what they showed against Romania. It is not about the scoreless draw
but the powerlessness of Domenech’s side.
It was simply incredible that
the squad with such players have no idea how to breach Romania's wall.
The main reason for concern aren't injuries but the lack of a clear
plan. Coach continues amusing the public with his statements, hides his
intentions and repeats that he is satisfied with the form, but the
numbers defy him.
Not only do France not score goals but they don’t
even create chances. They can’t play for a point against the Dutch, so
they will have to take more risk. Oranje are enthusiastic from marking
a tough win over Italy. We were wrong to underestimate them but already
after the first match it was clear that we judged them wrongly.
Marco
Van Basten created an excellent whole; the squad hasn’t got many famous
players in the back line but excellent midfield and the fact that they
are all prepared to sacrifice for the team is a certain improvement.
The Dutch have a made a great step towards the next round; each point
is golden so if they stay unbeaten against France they will be very
close to the round of 16.

After losing to Netherlands, Italians haven’t got much choice, to win
against Romania is an imperative. World champions went through a real
hell of public criticism and especially coach Donadoni. He recently
extended his contract with the Association but it is only a piece of
paper.
If his side gets eliminated in the first round, former Milan
player will certainly get fired. The defeat by Netherlands was perhaps
too high judging from what we saw in Bern but they certainly deserved
it. Azzurri were outplayed in the first half but they had a lot of
problems in defense which is Donadoni's fault alone.
He was completely
wrong about the choice of the players which we saw in the second half
when the squad seemed better as soon as Grosso, Del Piero and Cassano
got the chance. Romania kept the opening score against France; they
defended excellently so Les Blues didn't have the chance to seriously
compromise Lobont.
Piturca was aware of where the biggest threat is
coming from; his side were very disciplined and deserved not to lose.
Anyway, Romania will be a hard nut to crack for their other two rivals
in group C.

Chelsea have named Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new manager in succession to Avram Grant.
Scolari, who is currently in charge of the Portuguese side at Euro 2008, will take over at Stamford Bridge on 1 July.
"He is one of the world's top coaches with a record of success at country and club level," read a Chelsea statement.
Scolari won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and led Portugal to the
final of Euro 2004, and has also won nine domestic trophies in Brazil.
The Brazilian becomes the fourth manager during owner Roman
Abramovich's reign following the departures of Claudio Ranieri, Jose
Mourinho and Grant.
The latter only lasted eight months, despite guiding Chelsea to
second place in the Premier League and to their first Champions League
final last season.
