Decisive duel in group D: Sweden and Russia will decide about the quarterfinals considering that both side have won Greece and lost to Spain.

The Vikings are in a better situation, since a draw would suit them because they have better goal margin. David Villa's strike saw Sweden lose to Spain in the very finish. They didn’t handle well losing but if you take a look at the standings it all comes down to the same thing.

Actually, even if they took a point they would have to at least remain unbeaten against Russia. After a great fight Guus Hiddink’s side beta Greece, used their chances and scored a winning goal. They seemed much more mature than against Spain, which can be an illusion since their rivals were much weaker.

Dutch expert managed to overcome big problems in forming the line-up (he wasn't able to count on Arshavin and Pogrebnyak). After two matches of suspension, excellent Arshavin is back, though it is not sure whether he will join the starting eleven. Hiddink’s theory is that the squad have gained enough self-confidence, they are inspired and it would be better if Zenit captain is a hidden weapon on the bench.

Although they were considered favourites in group C, Italy and France could already on Tuesday night pack their suitcases and head back home. Nothing is up to them anymore, both sides have taken a point and even if Romania win Netherlands who are playing for honour, Les Blues and Azzurri will continue to watch the competition from the stands.

There are no easy rivals in the so-called “death group” but no one hoped that Netherlands could beat both great rivals and practically get the entire job done after only two matches. This saw France and Italy face their worst nightmare: they are about to play a knock-out match already in the first stage.

A lot has been said about the rivalry between these two sides. It all started with World Cup finals in Berlin and continued through EURO 2008 qualifications. At one time this rivalry even crossed some boundaries as in the case when Italian fans booed La Marseillaise in Milan.

France boss, Domenech added insult to injury by accusing Azzurri of cheating and fixing games, after which he faced a furious burst of Italian media. But, it should all be put aside now, both sides are aware that the most important thing is to remain calm and that they must win.

Orange colour is in, the Dutch have swarmed Swiss streets and according to the estimates there are about 100 000 of them in search for the tickets for the second stage; their team were dominant in group C and already after two rounds qualified for the quarterfinals.

Russia or Sweden will await them, though whoever their rivals may be in the second round Oranje will be the favourites. After impressive wins over Italy and France, Van Basten’s squad’s rates have grown high, now they are seen as possible main favourites for the crown.

After not so convincing qualifiers this squad simply exploded in the final tournament. Romania found themselves in a situation where they hold destiny in their own hands and they weren’t' given much chances before the competition started. They played tough against Italy and France; they were close to victory against Azzurri since their bets player Mutu missed the golden opportunity from the white spot.

With two points they are ahead of France and Italy and a point could lead them to the quarterfinals if the duel between Azzurri and Les Blues ends without winners.

Croatia coach Slaven Billic is set to ring the changes for his side's final Group D match against Poland.

With a last eight spot already secured, Billic is set to start Dario Simic and Ivan Klasnic, while five players are a booking away from suspension.

Leo Beenhakker, the Poland coach, says the need to win may force him to juggle his starting line-up.

Beenhakker is without the injured Jakub Blaszczykowski and Maciej Zurawski, while Ebi Smolarek may be dropped.

Smolarek, who led Poland's attack with nine goals in qualifying and came into the tournament with huge expectations, but has so far disappointed at the finals.

For Croatia, Luka Modric, Darijo Srna,Josip Simunic, Robert Kovac, Ivica Olic and Mladen Petric have all received one yellow card and could be rested to avoid missing the quarter-finals.

Klasnic should come in up front, becoming the first player to take part at a European Championship after a kidney transplant.

Newsflash

ImageZURICH, Switzerland (AP)—Argentina remained No. 1 in the largely unchanged FIFA world rankings Wednesday, with the United States at No. 21.

With just 20 international soccer games affecting the monthly list, Argentina was followed by Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany. The Czech Republic, France, Greece, Portugal and the Netherlands completed the top 10.

The only change in the top 20 was Cameroon’s jump over Mexico to 16th. No team in the top 50 rose or fell by more than two places.

All six confederations have the same leading team as last month: Argentina, Italy, Ghana (14th), Mexico, Japan (37th) and New Zealand (78th).
