Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has grudgingly accepted his fate after being ruled out of UEFA EURO 2008.
The 24-year-old Zenit St. Petersburg striker has failed to recover from
a knee cartilage problem that has plagued him since the 2-1 friendly
win against Serbia on 28 May – and has now been ruled out of the
tournament.
The news comes as a major blow to the forward, who
was beginning to enjoy greater prominence on both the club and
international scene.
But Pogrebnyak is putting on a brave face
after hearing the news, perhaps reconciled by the fact that he is still
young and will get others chances to perform on the biggest stage.
"There is no point in keeping an injured player here. Life goes on," he told UEFA’s official tournament website.
"My knee was in pain even before the Serbia match.
"Before
that game I decided to take to the pitch and have a run out. The injury
quickly resurfaced so we decided to take another break.

Switzerland and Czech Republic will open the championship in Basel.
St-Jakob Park stadium will certainly try to be the boost for one of the
championship co-hosts.
Swiss know that a good start is the most
important thing and most experts think that the duel against Czech
Republic can be crucial when it comes to qualifying for the second
round.
Actually, Portugal are considered to be the biggest favourites
in group A and that Switzerland’s real aim is second place, that is to
say, getting ahead of Saturday’s rivals. Anyway, these are only
prognosis; home side will be up against the squad that many consider
the favourites from the shadow.
The Czech have excellent tradition on
the continent's biggest competition. They played in 1996 finals and
twenty years before that, they earned the European champion title.
However, back then they formed a joint state with Slovakians but Czech
players were the nucleus of the squad. Bruckner’s squad have been
playing together for a long time; they will miss Rosicky but all the
same, they ended up even ahead of Germany in the group stage.

Portugal face Turkey in their Euro 2008 opener on Saturday wih Cristiano Ronaldo now established as one of the world's top players.
Another two-goal winning performance from striker Nuno Gomes against Turkey would suit coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Gomes,
who is expected to lead the line in the Group A game in Geneva, struck
twice to give Portugal a 2-0 win over the Turks when they last met in
the Euro 2000 quarter-finals.
The result had other
ramifications because coach Fatih Terim, now in charge of Turkey but
then about to join Fiorentina, signed the Portuguese striker for the
Italian team.
The two, who have a mutual respect for each
other, meet again but on opposite sides as Portugal look to win a
trophy they have edged ever closer to over the last 12 years.
Portugal, quarter-finalists in England
in 1996, reached the 2000 semi-finals with that win over Turkey, and
then the final when they hosted the tournament four years ago, only to
become the victims of giant-killers Greece.
