After their 3-2 (2-1) win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg are back in the hunt to play in international football.
The
Wolves have become tougher and tougher as the season nears its end. And
Felix Magath is already letting his intentions be known before facing
his ex-club VfB Stuttgart this Saturday: "We have a real final match
here at home for the UEFA Cup against VfB Stuttgart. Now that we're so
close, we want to move into international football", said coach,
sporting director and CEO of VfL Wolfsburg after the match.
Well-earned victory
After the scoreless draw against Bayern München and the win against
Frankfurt, Magath faces his third former employer in a row on the 33rd
matchday. But that doesn't interest the boss in light of a possible
spot in the UEFA Cup. "If it was something special when I faced off
against former clubs, then I wouldn't have any ordinary days in the
Bundesliga", said Magath.
On the back of their seventh away win, VfL have pulled even with
currently sixth placed Bayer Leverkusen two matches before seasons end
and, with 48 points, are only three points behind VfB Stuttgart. With
28 points in the second leg and currently the third best team after the
winter break, Wolfsburg have made a statement to competitors and played
better down the stretch than Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Hamburg.
Match winner Dzeko
Wolfsburg continued the trend against the Frankfurt and their weak
defence. Bosnian player Edin Dzeko exploited a defensive blunder eleven
minutes before the final whistle to seal it 3-2.
VfL had watched Frankfurt equalise twice before previously taking the
lead off scores by Grafite (4th min.) and Marcel Schäfer (27th min.).
The determination of Eintracht captain Ioannis Amanatidis (22nd min.,
penalty kick) and Markus Weissenberger (62nd min.) were not enough to
deny Wolfsburg the win.
Three goals allowed in three home matches
The ambitions of being a part of the UEFA Cup have all but dissipated
In Frankfurt. The gloomy picture features five losses in the past six
matches and four home matches without a win.
"We allowed three goals at home in our matches against Nürnberg, Bayern
and Wolfsburg. That's unacceptable. That means we would have had to
score four goals in each match to win", revealed Amanatidis about the
problems facing Eintracht.
