Defeat for the visitors effectively put paid to that dream, and leaves Leverkusen with the chance of drawing level on points in the race for a UEFA Cup slot.

Two from Gomez not enough

Tinga (35.) and Frei (59. and 79.) won the game for Dortmund, with Mario Gomez also notching two for Stuttgart (55. and 83.) to take his total for the season to 18.

In an end-to-end encounter, BVB put in an excellent performance despite the absence of keeper Marc Ziegler, midfieldersSebastian Kehl and Florian Kringe and Mladen Petric up front.

Dortmund solid at the back

Stuttgart looked good on the ball for long spells, but lacked bite up front, in the face of a home defence that was giving little away.

Tinga fired BVB in front with a shot on the turn, with Frei and Mats Hummels going close to grabbing a second before the break.

Frei scores from free-kick

Dortmund continued to look the more dangerous after the restart, but it was Stuttgart who found the net first, Gomez making the most of their first real chance of the match.

The hosts' response was prompt: four minutes later, Frei exploited some poor positional play by Stuttgart keeper Raphael Schäfer in converting a free-kick from 20 metres out.

Good approach work from Nelson Valdez put Frei in for his second 20 minutes later to seal the points for Borussia. Gomez had one more strike up his sleeve - but it was too little, too late.
