Wenger Targeting A Defender And Creative Player Print E-mail

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed a few of his plans ahead of this summer's impending transfer activity...

WengerThe Gunners' boss has been heavily criticised in the wake of his side's late-season collapse for not spending enough on proven quality and squad depth, but he has remaned defiant in his principles.

Principles such as the wage structure, which has seen squad player turned prized asset Mathieu Flamini sign for Milan on a free transfer, and Alexander Hleb may be following him to the same city, but joining their city rivals Internazionale instead.

As such, reinforcements will be needed and Wenger has readily admitted as such. Much intrigue always surrounds what players the Professor will bring to the Premier League next, as he has had a track record of signing players largely unknown in this country and turning them into household names.

The former Monaco boss revealed yesterday that he will be buying a defensive player as well as a creative one, should all go according to plan.

"I will try to buy, maybe in the defensive area and one on the creative side of the game as well because we had some players, important players, who were out this year," said the Arsenal manager, quite possibly referring to the likes of Tomas Rosicky, among others.

He has been linked with signing Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth for a fee in the region of £12 million, but not often has Arsene been known to spend such money, which is exactly why the Gunners are rarely involved in domestic transfers

The Frenchman continued, blasting the importance many place on transfers and stressed the importance of player development - something he has become known for during over a decade in England with the Gunners.

"When there is a problem in England, people say 'you have to buy' - but you have to consider as well the development of your players internally," he explained.

"It isn't just down to money because we have bought players for nothing and they became world stars.

"It is as well down to the quality of the scouting, the quality of the work in training and the quality of the development in the players.

"I believe much more in that, working in an intelligent way to make a player improve.

"If we lose, people leave the game and say 'Wenger you must buy a centre forward' if we haven't scored, or they want a central defender if someone has made a mistake. But you have to accept that the team can be developed.

"This team made 68 points last year and this year 83. That is 15 points difference and in between we lost Thierry Henry and we lost many, many important players during the season. So you cannot say the team has not developed. Now the target for next season must be to make 90 or 92 points."
